Nishinohara Field Burning

A traditional event that signals the coming of spring at Mt. Sanbe.

This traditional event signals the coming of spring at Mt. Sanbe. Every year in late March, the grass that has been crushed by snow during winter is burned off to prevent wildfires and forestation in order to sustain the prairie environment. Flame spreading over the field is an amazing sight that many visitors find riveting.
Raising cattle has been popular in this area for around 400 years, and the fields on Mt. Sanbe have been utilized as pastureland and meadowland. The idyllic landscape where people and nature co-exist has been greatly appreciated, and the area was designated as a national park in 1963.
Citizen volunteers participate in this field fire event to help sustain the prairie environment.
