Sakedani Maple Leaf Highway and Autumn Foliage in Hikarihachimangu Shrine

This traditional event has been handed down from one generation to another only in the back-country of Shimane Prefecture.

The contrast created by the red and orange maple leaves and golden ginkgo leaves is out of this world.
The maple and ginkgo trees lining the streets are beautifully illuminated during the autumn foliage season.
The trees reflected upside-down on the water in the rice paddies make for great photographs during the day and when they are illuminated at night.
Hikari-ishi folklore is the reason this area is called “Hikari no Sato”. Long ago, there was a rock that gleamed all the time. The rock illuminated the town at night so the authorities made the farmers work all day and late into the night. Then, seeing that the farmers were totally exhausted, a strong farmer broke the rock into pieces. The broken rock gradually lost its gleam and finally became an ordinary rock.
